New location a Winner

Have you heard? Winners in North Bay is now located in the new strip mall on McKeown Avenue.

The brand new facilities of the "find fabulous for less" store are bigger than the old location, but the overall look and feel remain the same.

Clothing dominates the product offering. It has a prime position in the store, whereas the home décor section is tucked in the back. In fact, the space reserved for furniture, lamps and decorative items seems smaller than in the Lakeshore location. Somewhat disappointing I must say!

In any event, a visit to the store continues to be a "must" for anybody hunting for stylish benches or banquettes, neat storage solutions, small tables and accessories.

Let's take a look at some of the items in the store right now.

Industrial-style stools.

Beautiful bench with nail head trim and tufted seat.
Winners is a good place for
shabby-chic pieces, such as
this mirror with a washed-out
patina.

A laundry basket on wheels can be practical.

All wired up for spring

Brighten up your beige, brown or grey outdoor furniture with some happy, carefree furniture and accessories this spring! These colourful, easy-going pieces from Winners in North Bay are a good start:
Wired accent tables in fresh, summer
colours.
A quirky, wired chair for that special
place in your backyard.
Not all your outdoor furniture has
be beige! This bright red bistro set
will turn up the patio temperature
a notch.
The red in the pillow really jumps out!
Stylish spring pillows for your four-legged friend.
Chartreuse is that greenish-yellow colour that
adds a brave punch to any interior and that feels
so right for spring. Here combined with turquoise,
black and grey. Yes!
What says spring more than birds and light green
foliage?

And now to my absolute favourites. These fun and
funky area rugs in 100% cotton measure 30"x50"
and cost only $19.99! Big, contemporary impact
for a small investment. Because of their thin profile,
you can also use them as a decorative throw in your
couch.

Celebrating your cottage in style

White plank floors and walls provide a fresh
and clean base for your decor. Red and white
is a classic summer combination. Be consistent
and stick to the colour scheme also in the
smallest details (note the red geranium plant!).
Summer time, cottage time. Easy living is the order of the day, and that also applies to how you organize your summer home. Ideally, it has to stand up to sandy feet and dripping bathing suites; it has to accommodate visiting relatives and improvised corn-on-the-cob dinners with friends; and it has to invite you to crawl up and finally read that treasured book. All this and you still want it to look stylish! How do you achieve it? My solution includes a crisp, white base which you combine with one major accent colour, natural textures and accessories, and an effort to always try to limit your furniture and things in general to the essentials. I hope these pictures will inspire you to create your own easy, breezy summer haven!
A white-and-blue floral slipcover is
quintessentially cottage! Seek out
local thrift stores for old tables that
you can refinish.
Enjoy a peaceful breakfast surrounded
by stripes - a safe summer choice for
upholstery and cushions.
New and old - furniture as well as guests -
typically share the space around the summer
table. The bright red mirror and chairs give
the room some needed punch - and tons of
style!
And here are a few accessories - all found in North Bay stores - which will complete your home's summer look:
Lanterns from Winners.
Weathered mirrors from Winners.
Wicker stool from Vested Interest and sisal rug from Stradwick's Carpet One.

Summer essentials from Winners

Pink, orange, yellow, turquoise... When it comes to summer accessories and seasonal furniture, it's all about colour. And colour was precisely what I found during my latest visit to Winners. I just can't get enough of summer lanterns for the patio, bright and happy pillows for the hammock, and multicoloured baskets. Or is it that I just can't get enough of summer? Have a look at some of my finds. They are all from Winners in North Bay:

"Boho chic" pillow in summery colours. $29.99 for
a set of two.
This 4' x 6' cotton area rug is a bargain for $19.99.
Baskets are your best friends when it comes to
keeping your home organized and tidy. These
pretty pieces come in three sizes and the price
range is $14.99 to $29.99.
Hopefully, we'll get lots of use of a pair of beach
chairs this year!
More fun lanterns and a cool vase, that could also
double as a candle holder. $12.99 and $19.99
respectively
Three-piece patio set for $129.99 The mosaic
decoration gives the table and chairs a fresh,
oriental touch.
Use it as a stool or a side table, but
treat it with care. It's pottery! $39.99.

Serve your cool drinks on this stylish
rainbow-coloured tray. $9.99.

An interesting way to display your potted
plants is to group them in a miniature
greenhouse...
That idea is implemented here, in a similar
greenhouse. What do you think?

Mirror, mirror on the wall...

Mirrors are often used to bring light to dark corners and to make a small space look bigger. They are perfect for that! But mirrors are not ideal just anywhere. Avoid putting them right in front of a window or a door, especially if it is the front entrance. In those locations, mirrors act as barriers and detract from the welcoming feeling that you want to create. Also think twice about putting them in any area of your home where you want to feel completely relaxed.
On the other hand, what better way to capture a beautiful view or to reflect a nice plant or candlelight than a mirror! Try a round or oval mirror for a change. Homes are mostly rectangular and square anyway, and cupboards, windows, and so on add to that. Break up the shapes a bit!
So, who in the land is fairest of all? Here are my North Bay picks.

I found this mirror at Winners. if you want a touch of glamour, this one is for you. Its sparkly, mosaic frame is sure to bring light into your home. And the price tag is right: $59.99.
In general, I like the range of mirrors that Winners offers. It covers oversized show stoppers, smaller accent mirrors and everything in between.

The Great Room is another good place for mirrors. I have seen these two from Renwil there. Aren't they gorgeous? I would buy two of the rectangular mirror and put them side by side, for even more of an impact. Winners has also carried a similar mirror, so watch for it in the store.

The distressed wood look is in, we saw that at IDS11 in Toronto. In North Bay, you can find this style at Vested Interest and Winners. Alger Furniture also has a unique wood-framed mirror which I envision in a front hall in a home devoted to a modern cottage style.
